My organic line for kids~ Made by a Mama

Today I want to show off some of the new clothing I have been making for my Made By A Mama line. I design, sew, and hand dye with low impact dyes. I use organic cotton and hemp blend fabrics,which are so soft and feel really great to wear. I have been making appliques since I started sewing , I started sewing and selling clothing in 1994 (on the lots of Grateful Dead shows) . Lately I have been adding a lot of really cute appliques to my organic clothing for children. It makes the clothing really fun and it'a a great way to use up some of my multitude of scraps. I hate to throw them away because it just seems so wasteful. I will be adding a lot of new items coming up so keep checking to see some fun new items~

Paper Nor Plastic Reusable Bags

These reusable bags from Paper Nor Plastic are great. I received two of them when I had some of my clothing designs in an eco-friendly fashion show in Vegas. I use them all of the time. They are really strong, much stronger than any of the other reusable bags I have. I have loaded them up beyond belief with no problems. My Whole foods bags, which seem like little more than really strong paper ripped shortly after I bought them. Trader joe's also has some great bags, but they really don't compare to these Paper Nor Plastic bags. They have a deal when you buy three at $9.99 each you get one free.

Reasons to support Organic Cotton

Eighty-four million pounds of pesticides are sprayed on the 14.4 million acres of conventional cotton grown in the U.S. (5.85 pounds/acre), ranking cotton second behind corn in total amount of pesticides sprayed, according to the US Department of Agriculture, 25% of pesticides are used on cotton. These pesticides pollute our water sources, soil, air, and are also dangerous to people living near the cotton fields. Over 2.03 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers were applied to conventional cotton every year (142 pounds/acre), making cotton the fourth most heavily fertilized crop behind corn, winter wheat, and soybeans. To put these numbers in perspective, it takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt. The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in the United States as “possible”, “likely”, “probable” or “known” human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos and trifluralin).
Buying Organic cotton also limits the use of genetically modified crops, because to be certified organic crops cannot be genetically modified. Also when you support farmers who grow cotton organically, you support sustainable farming practices which is better for everyone.
